“Can I have a word with you?” Cotton asked Sheila as he led her away from the group.

“What is it?” she asked.

Cotton stopped and turned to face the woman. Her eyes were so black, it was unsettling. Like looking into an abyss. He’d been close to the black-eyed cannibals he’d gone up against at Cypress Mill, but not like this. Not close enough to really study them.

“How are you feeling?” Cotton asked.

“Fine,” Sheila answered. “Why are you asking?”

“If you’re not yourself,” Cotton said. “In any way, I need to know.”

Sheila stayed locked on the former SEAL with her unblinking gaze.

“Nothing about me is the same,” she finally said. “But I’m in control of it, if that’s what you’re asking.”

“For how long?”

“Until I’m not.”

“Not sure I like that answer,” Cotton said with a shake of his head.

“Well, you’re fresh out of options, friend,” Sheila said. “Like it or not, you need me. I can do things none of you can, not the least of which is I’ll know if those things are coming at us. I’m not quite fully synced up with them, but I’m still part of that hive mind. Knowing when you’re about to get overrun and being able to get the hell out of the way isn’t something you can do without.”

“True,” Cotton agreed.

“Look, I get it. You just want to protect your people, and like it or not, I’m not a person anymore. Not even the way that Roland and the others are. I’m not even one of the black-eyed cannibals.”

“What are you?”

“Something else.”
